Is a ProPera Legal advocate a lawyer?
No. Advocates are not attorneys and not paralegals, and no attorney supervises their work. They do not give legal advice and do not represent you in court. They are experienced people who handle practical tasks you specifically direct: organizing your case, operating the software, keeping your paperwork in order, and being there while you do the work.
How is an advocate different from hiring an attorney?
An attorney can advise you, decide strategy, and act for you. An advocate does none of those things. An advocate helps with the practical work around a case: paperwork, organization, software, and preparation. If what you need is someone to tell you what to do, you need an attorney, and an advocate is not a cheaper substitute for one.
What are the limits on what an advocate can do?
Advocates handle clerical, organizational, and technical work. They do not choose what to file, do not tell you what the law means for your facts, do not decide what your evidence proves, do not write legal arguments, and do not speak for you to a court, a clerk, or the other side. Every state decides for itself what counts as practicing law, and those rules differ. If something you ask for crosses that line, your advocate will decline and point you toward a licensed attorney. That is not us being unhelpful; it is the boundary the work operates inside. Advocates also do not assist with bankruptcy, immigration, tax, or patent and trademark matters at all, because those proceedings have their own federal rules about who may prepare documents and be paid for it.
What can I ask an advocate to do?
Set you up on ProPera Legal, organize and label your case documents, enter information you give them, format and assemble what you have written, keep a shared record of dates and commitments you identify, sit with you while you work through the software, observe a public hearing and take notes, and help you gather the material an attorney has asked you for. If you want an opinion about your case, what to file, or whether an argument is any good, that is a question for a licensed attorney rather than an advocate.
Who will my advocate be? Can I switch?
You choose. When you sign up we send you the full list of advocates with their backgrounds and their rates, and you can meet one before you decide anything. If the fit is not right after you have started, you can switch to a different advocate at any time, no questions asked.
Can an advocate help if I already have an attorney?
Yes, and it is often the best use of one. An advocate keeps your file organized, tracks what your attorney has asked you for, and helps you get it to them on time. Ask your attorney before an advocate joins a call or meeting with them: bringing a third party into a privileged conversation can cost you that privilege, and that is your attorney's call to make, not ours.
How much does it cost?
Each advocate sets their own hourly rate, so what you pay depends on who you work with. You will be told that advocate’s rate before you are charged anything, and you can walk away at that point. The ProPera Legal software itself is free to start, and advocacy is a separate paid service you never have to use.
